Older than the year Italy united into a country, Leone pastiglie (1847) is a classic candy that somehow seems to the be the modern product of a designer fascinated with retro culture (their factory is painted with a mix of pastel pink, mint green and light violet!). The candies are intensely flavored with fruit and plant essences and dissolve smoothly, unlike chalky tasting mints. Flavors include peppermint, strawberry, cinnamon and “ugly but good balsamic liquorice.” But what everyone really loves (me included) is the amazing vintage packaging. My favorite box belongs to the citrusy absinthe pastiglie which feature a pair of dreamy eyes showing the effects of the green liquid.
