Andrea Zubani is a young Italian photographer from Carrara who has exhibited in Italy. Over the last few years he has also emerged as a notable talent in the Australian art world. This success, including finalist recognition in the 2009 Head on Portrait Prize, is based on his ability to turn an Italian eye to his new country of residence. Free of a foreign or detached perspective, Zubani’s work offers fresh and insightful glimpses of his new hometown, Sydney.

Zubani’s collections clearly express an understanding of photography as a “visual diary.” The candid snapshots of everyday life capture imaginative images that hint at a layer of personal and at times turbulent stories hiding under the city’s surface. With an eye for social documentary, but the figurative touch of an artist, his stark black and white images reveal the hidden complexity of everyday life.
