Although he’s been directing since he was 22, Bernardo Bertolucci (Il conformista, Last Tango in Paris, The Dreamers, has never won the Cannes Palme d’Or for best film. Yesterday, however, he received the Palme d’Honneur, the new Cannes Lifetime Achievement Award.
Now wheelchair -bound – an experience he compares to being a constant dolly movement – Bertolucci hasn’t made a new film in several years, but is currently working on a new project. He has revealed that his return to directing was inspired by viewing James Cameron’s Avatar.
