When some people think of reading they think of stuffy libraries and heavy books with yellow pages, but the Drop Bookcase designed by Oki Sato aka Nendo for the Italian furniture company Cappellini definitely celebrates the lighter side of reading.
Inspired by the colors of Japan’s natural landscape, the Drop Bookcase is crafted from laser-cut sheet metal and finished with a matte laquer. The three different height models are each formed by a single column of square compartments. It’s the last compartment, which appears to be perched precariously at a 45 degree angle as though about to drop that gives a touch of humor to the bookshelf.
