I remember that, when I was a child, my Grandmother had these metal basket weave chairs on the patio of her house. I loved sitting in them as I watched the rain come down on summer nights or observed nature waking up with me early in the morning before any adults were out of bed. Perhaps that’s why I love the Kobi armchair designed by Patrick Norguet for Italian design group Alias. Not only is the Kobi a much more refined and modern version of Grandma’s outdoor chairs, but it is also a lot more comfortable as well.
Inspired by the history of quality Italian design, Norguet put his full energy into his collaboration with Alias as he aimed at creating a standout design-object. The result is Kobi’s stunning retro, but also minimalist, aesthetic. Choosing to work primarily in aluminum because of its lightness and strength, Norguet created a steel basket weave seat that is supported by an aluminum belt resting on aluminum legs that can optionally be finished in an oak veneer. The seat cushion comes in 5 vibrant colors and three styles.
While Grandma’s chairs might have turned to rust a long time ago, I’m excited to pull up the Kobi outdoor chair and watch the birds or the rain. It’s the best of both worlds when you can enjoy a grown-up design while returning to those moments when you were a kid and had no problems at all.
