Following buzz worthy of a secret weapons launch, including spy videos, rumors and speculative renderings, Lamborghini revealed its new flagship car at the Geneva Car Show.

The lead-up involved peeks and leaks of many of the LP 700-4 Aventador’s components.  We saw the engine, gearbox, monocoque and chassis.  By late February the tease had gone on long enough that bloggers were using a layer of humor to hide their frustration with Lambo’s tactics.

Since Lamborghini tends to develop a new flagship car about once every decade, expectations have been high.  It’s the lighter supercar successor to the Lamborghini Murciélago. The 12 cylinder 700-horsepower engine taunts drivers to aim for its top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph).  With a carbon fiber monocoque cell, rigid aluminum frame, and pushrod suspension the Aventador has even led some car fans to attempt to sneak into the Lamborghini pavilion in Geneva.

The Aventador might be drawing a lot of interest, but until its summer release only the press can test drive it.

A fighter-jet sleek car featuring Lamborghini’s signature scissor doors, the Aventador is being touted as an example of Italian car styling.  It’s dramatic, aggressive and attention-grabbing.  Lamborghini might have a history of slow sale periods, but fortunately for Italian car fans, the LP 700-4 demonstrates that in the future the brand will inherit technology and resources, rather than style, from its German parent company Volkswagen AG.
