A genius idea. Using potholes from all over the world as photography sets, transforming annoying chasms in the pavement in works of art, is the brainchild of these Italo-Canadian artisti duo husband & wife Davide Luciano and Claudia Ficca.
“Si, siamo Italiani, even tough we were born in Montreal, Canada”.
Claudia: My father is from Abruzzo. Mother from Calabria.
Davide: Dad is from Campobasso, and mom is from Lazio.
What’s your favorite Italian Lifestyle “ceremony” you incorporate in you life?
Two words: SUNDAY LUNCH!!! Our parents and grand-parents have instilled many italian traditions in our lives, but in the end, everything always revolves around food.
POTHOLES, is a photography project featuring rural craters in Montreal, Toronto, New York and Los Angeles. Miami is next.
How did you guys come up with the idea?
CLAUDIA & DAVIDE: “After a sudden collision with a canyon sized crater of a pothole we decided to channel our frustration into a positive project where the useless pothole would be a source of humor and creativity. Our imaginative and diverse application for potholes led us on a relentless quest in search of the perfect pothole. On site we set up our props as required to build the set we desire. The entire shoot takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes to complete. Our shooting sessions are evenly divided with each of us taking a turn behind the camera. Camera angles and model placement and direction are discussed and at times improvised on the set, we don’t use photoshop to create the image or add props. Of course, the menial yet crucial task of watching for traffic is shared by all. Since the POTHOLES series is shoot entirely on location during uninterrupted traffic, vigilance is key”.
C+D: “We have two shows coming up: a group exhibition in Toronto at the First Canadian Place in July 18 to August 31 (http://www.fcpevents.com) and a solo exhibition in Montréal at Galerie D’avignon from September 9th to September 22 , 2011 (http://www.galeriedavignon.ca). Also, we are in pre-production for our next photography series which we plan to shoot very soon. The theme is still a secret... We want to shoot a couple of scenes before releasing it”.
