When you think of the purpose of a vase you probably think of fluid water. Italian design studio 4P1B takes a much more dynamic view of this resource with its brilliant series of vases for Italian silversmith De Vecchi Milano 1935.
Inspired by the transformative properties of water, the Frozen Water vases are created by pouring water into a raw metal vessel and cooling it to 273 degrees kelvin or 0 degrees celsius. As the water freezes, it expands, pushing the metal container outward into subtly different shapes. After it returns to room temperature, the vase form is drained and coated in silver. The result is a series of vases, each with a unique shape that manages to be both geometric and organic.
