Contemporary Italian menswear
Andrea Pompilio is a talented emerging Italian designer whose success grows with each passing fashion season. Born in Pesaro, he spent his childhood playing in his grandmother’s boutique, then later started his career with a move to Milan. In the last year alone he has added a womenswear collection to his already well-established menswear line, become the only designer ever invited to show at Giorgio Armani’s theater and produced the second edition of a capsule collaboration with Japanese streetwear label Onitsuka Tiger.
Behind Andrea Pompilio’s current success is over 13 years of experience working for major fashion houses such as Alessandro Dell’Acqua, Calvin Klein, Prada and Yves Saint Laurent. During that time he has cultivated an aesthetic that combines elements of classic American sportswear with fine Italian tailoring and bold graphic prints.
Pompilio has consistently shone at Pitti Uomo and in 2011, a year after the debut of his eponymous collection, he won the prestigious Who’s on Next prize. This year, after catching the attention of Giorgio Armani, Pompilio was personally invited by the legendary designer to show his Spring Summer 2014 collection during men’s fashion week at the Giorgio Armani theater in Milan.
With his Spring Summer 2014 collection Pompilio tries once again walks the thin line between casual and classic menswear. This contrast was captured perfectly in Pompilio’s runway show by the use of heavily tattooed models whose inked skin stood out against the classic sartorial silhouettes of the clothes they wore. The collection seems to be a cacophony of patterns and prints in rich hues with traditional menswear standards such as suits, polo shirts, bomber jackets and trench coats, but what makes Pompilio such an authoritative voice in fashion today is his ability to turn this ix of animal-inspired, paisley and batik prints into a cohesive contemporary look with retro flavor.
